Oakton is a census-designated place in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 34,166 at the 2010 census. Located in Northern Virginia, its center is 16 miles west of Washington, D.C. The CDP is bordered to the south by the city of Fairfax, to the west by Fair Oaks, to the northwest by Difficult Run, to the north by the Wolf Trap CDP, to the east by the town of Vienna, and to the southeast by Merrifield.
According to a 2010 estimate, the median income for a household in the CDP was $167,512, and the median income for a family was $188,308. Males had a median income of $111,856 versus $73,254 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $65,934. Fairfax County Public Schools operates the public schools. There are two public schools located in Oakton: Oakton Elementary School and Waples Mill Elementary School.

Oakton is a census-designated place (CDP) in Fairfax County, Virginia, in the United States and is in the Washington Metropolitan Area adjacent to Vienna, Fairfax, and Reston. Public high school students living in Oakton attend James Madison or Oakton High School. There are several equestrian properties and trails in the Oakton area as well as walking trails and part of the county CCT (Cross County Trail). Oakton has a library adjacent to the Oakton Shopping Center. The population was 34,166 at the 2010 census. The ZIP code is 22124. The area is traversed by I-66 and Virginia State Route 123 with easy access to I-66. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 9.7square miles (25.1km), all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 29,348 people, 11,118 households, and 7,649 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,024.1 people per square mile (1,168.2/km). There were 11,392 housing units at an average density of 1,173.9/sqmi (453.5/km).
